In 2012, Jonathan and Jill Story joined MORE than Sport on our first trip to Ironman Panama to partner with Homes of Hope to build a home for a family in the Darien Gap region. Through the experience they realized that they wanted to continue to do MORE in the communities where Jonathan would race. As a result of that project, when the Story’s got married later that year they asked for donations to be made to MORE than Sport instead of having people give them gifts.
Also, in 2012 MORE than Sport connected with TJ Vandehey, another triathlete, who was living and working with YWAM (Youth With a Mission) in St. Croix. TJ was a future Ironman participant who wanted to use his platform and local relationships to do MORE.
Through these relationships the idea was then formed to have the Story’s travel to Ironman St. Croix and partner with TJ to develop a project to serve the local community. Through TJ’s hard work and persistence we were able to partner with the Queen Louise Home to create an event after the St. Croix Ironman on May 5th.
The Queen Louise Home provides temporary placement in a family setting for children ages birth to 12 who have been the victims of abandonment, abuse or neglect. They also are home to the islands most critically disabled and medically fragile children. While there they receive love, support and physical therapy. All with the hope of being returned to their families or being placed into a loving home.
Through the Story’s involvement MORE than Sport was able to raise nearly $4,500 to establish a fund that has and will continue to purchase bicycles for children who stay at the home. According to Jill, “we were able to clear all of the old playground equipment away to make room for the future bike path, and purchase a bike, helmet and other things for the children. For those with disabilities and unable to ride a bike, the caregivers gave us other suggestions and we were able to give something to each child. One of the administrators told me it was the happiest she had ever seen some of the children. It was a wonderful experience.”
According to TJ, “this weeks time partnering with MORE than Sport was AWESOME!”
MORE than Sport is grateful to Jonathan and Jill Story, TJ Vandehey, YWAM St. Croix, The Queen Louise Home and all those who made generous donations to make this event a success. We look forward to doing MORE in St. Croix!
